CABINS entry by wpereira

Hello everyone, well this is obviously inspired in a popular video game and a couple of films. I’m not to sure if I’m breaking any rules by doing something out of our planet but I always liked this concept and wanted to create something in this type of environment.

Concept: This a BioRing, turns out mankind was… kind enough to not only build a ring for themselves but also one for other species as a shelter. The idea was to preserve and save the wildlife of our planet by creating this bio ring which replicates their natural environment.

Our cabin is not a simple cabin with luxuries, is more of a shelter where scientist study and help the preservation of the lifeforms in the ring.

So far I’ve done some rough modelling and a few shots to get my head around this.

I know is a bit ambitious considering that I must deliver a couple of 360 views apart from 3 renders but I’ll do my best in administrating my time between this and my current job. It’s a shame I cannot drink redbull.

Cheers!

I focused on tweaking the lighting (ambient and artificial) to get closer to the mood I’m looking for, besides having warm lights I decided to add some extra colors as complementary lights to shake up things a bit (I’m a fan of cyberpunk, purple lights!) and I’m pleased with the results. Also I invested more time on the shaders and added some ponds.

Next step was to finish the rusted metal plates starting by creating each individual plate from the existing model with the gaps in between them, then I added some thickness and a turbosmooth modifier. The reason for all this was to have a bit of randomness in the plates textures and not doing a single massive texture.

Also I kept tweaking and moving things inside the school to make it more “alike” the real thing, after this it was all about adding more elements like lamps, bookshelves, streetlamps.

This will be my last update, I’ll push myself to show a final render next time. Best of lucks to all!

After picking up the camera angle I went ahead and started to look for some references for the mood and overall look of the image. I couldn’t resist doing an image post rain with a clear dusk sky, the way lights reflects on the wet pavement and concrete gives a interesting look to it. Also is possible to give a moody, a bit cozy, maybe a bit nostalgic feeling to it, playing with different light temperatures and tones.

I’m pleased with the camera angle, I think it has a sweet balance between the school and its surroundings. It was a bit tricky to find a different angle from the existing photos there’s no doubt these already catch the best angles of the building but of course there’s also a chance to tell a story, add features and life to the composition.

The plan was to set up a few cameras and explore the building from different angles and perspectives. Besides that I started playing with a basic light setup with a HDRI. It’s a quite interesting building which is located in a tight space surrounded by other buildings, this in my opinion makes the rest of the building a complementary part of our protagonist, there’s an interesting contrast in style and materials so I tried to keep the other buildings in the shots and play with that.

I even went further and tried an angle as if someone is taking a photo from a 2nd floor from a neighbor building.
