Church of Light by Elvin Aliyev

Tadao Ando’s Church of Light has had its share of 3d recreations. Elvin’s recent forum post is among the best recreations I’ve seen to date. His attention to the materials, camera placement and light shows great respect to the work of the master that Ando is.

I might even go further and say that these set is better than any photo I’ve seen in showcasing the design. Since this is in 3d now, it might be super cool to do some cutout perspective views and thus get to see it in a new and interesting way. What say you Elvin?

you’re welcome! it was, however, a much less elaborated model than elvin’s. it was mainly used as a study model by myself. i modeled the geometry in formz, then did the scene setup, texturing and lighting in lightwave, and rendered with maxwell.

@ronenbekerman yes, basically still using the same setup today. the rendering with maxwell is straight out LW via plugin, so it is more like a 2 app workflow. as my work usually focuses on very large and complex projects, i’m using formz because in need of CAD-like features like symbol handling, flexible layer and object handling, high precision numerical drawing tools, proper DWG import, massive geometry handling, etc. the result is always a real solid model, which makes rendering with an unbiased or ‘physical’ based engine definitely easier. the export from formz as LWO is very smooth, making the workflow trouble free.

on the plus side for a few extra steps to transport the data from one app to the other and for not having an integrated modeling environment i’d put the freedom of using formz for creating the geometry as a dedicated architectural solid modeler on one side and on the other side the option to use lightwave with it’s own excellent render engine, alternatively the very fast kray render plugin for fast and high quality animation rendering, or the slower maxwell engine with imo the best overall image quality on the market. but as it’s always good to be able to use different tools, so i’m also trying modo these days, and start getting nice results as well…

Thank you so much, Mr.Bekerman, for your attention to my work and your appreciation that is so valuable for me. Church of the light is the one of my most favorite projects of the great master and I’m now planning to go further and finish the Sunday school . And above all this I’m going to do a making-off exclusively for your website as soon as possible. So, there is so much more to do! Thank you again!

@ElvinAliyev You are most welcome Elvin, work like this can not go unnoticed. I look forward very much for the making-of article about this scene, as I’m sure all others here too!

I think this is one of those very rare occasions when the renders look better than the photos! Very well done indeed. Love the lighting and texturing work too.
