In your head

The main idea is the interaction of visitors with the museum. Being an exterior image, it is difficult to show what is happening inside the museum, that is why I opted for an artwork that can be appreciated from the outside.
Looking for inspiration to create a storyline aligned to my idea, I found the work of artist Gustav Hellberg, the exhibition “In your head”. Using this artwork, I was able to consolidate my idea of people interacting with the museum, the focal point of my image.
This artwork is located close to one of the entrances of the museum, in a segment of the facade that has been displaced outwards. In the middle of this new segment, a fixed slightly open door has been placed. Behind the door is a wall illuminated by hidden lights, making it difficult to understand the size of the concealed space. From hidden speakers comes the sound of a man’s voice repeating the phrase “Is it safe?”
I chose this camera angle because I wanted the artwork (door) to be the focal point of the image, besides, I wanted to show as much details as possible replicating the imperfections that exist in real world.
All the modelling was made in 3DS MAX, using as reference the drawings found in Archdaily and a lot of pictures of the museum.
The environmental lighting is a Vray Dome Light with an HDRI and the interior lighting are simple Vray Lights.
Postproduction was made in Photoshop, it consisted mainly color correction and people integration. For the people, I took the photography in my studio, simulating the lighting in the rendering.
I did all the work in approximately 30 hours, it was very hard to finish on time. If I could do something different, it would be to start a few days earlier.

Mood and feel

I want to blend in the environment, building, lighting together to have the most perfect mood and feel settlement. In order the get this, I have to take important consideration of its landscape, such as ground texture, material colour, lighting, and shadow, etc.

The most difficult and most challenge of this project is the create the best location for tree shadow, to make the image looks more interesting. I used plugin Fores Pack the generate grass area, but for the tree use create it by myself to make it easy to control.

Arriving at the museum

I first tried to get to know the museum and the place, I live in Brazil so I used sites, google earth, archdaily …
Knowing the museum I started to model the building, it was a difficult but satisfactory stage since I liked the result
After the modeling I began to make a hand sketch to develop the environment, done that I used the model of the building that was already ready to choose the best angle for the proposed environment
Once this has been done in practice, I have already begun to set and prepare the shaders
So I started doing the rendering tests.
I started doing the work the way I wanted it, I did some small post-production tests to see if all the layers were in accordance with what I would need and rendered it in high resolution.
I tested a daytime render but I did not like it enough and finished the image with the dark weather I had been looking for since the beginning of the project.
The final image came out exactly as I wanted it, I managed to bring a low fog of the night, the effects of the lighting in that fog, and the building was not overshadowed by any effect or ambiance, everything was added generating a unit. Thank you, I hope you have enjoyed the project.
