Tomorrow Challenge 2018 entry by User-22308414

Having just little time to work on the project, we split the tasks into different parts, so that each of us could work with his own individual skillset and interests. We both learned much in a technical sense and we are happy that we could implement new techniques and plugins like substance, anima etc. Having the chosen composition and our main theme of a summer evening in mind, we focused on the overall mood and the lighting. Even though the challenge is finished by now, we will follow up the project and continue working on details, as well as other perspectives of the building.

But for now, here is our final entry!

Many thanks to Ronan and the Tomorrow team. We enjoyed participating the challenge!

We have now modelled and textured the interior walls and placed the light tubes according to the reference images. For the outside we worked on the building surfaces and we put in an image as backdrop, depicting the plaza in the distant. We have also started to add people to create the mood of a summer evening with some people walking by and some still working on the inside.

We used Photoshop to visualise our concept idea and to make sure that our initial idea and overall mood match the chosen composition.
In a next step, we applied different HDRI’s to the 3d model to compare the evening light moods and narrow down our choices. Finally, we chose a cloudy sky with warm sunlight that will be paired with a Corona sun in order to get a soft ambient light combined with direct sun rays.

Thank you Ronan and the Tomorrow team for organising this challenge. We are a team of two artists and designers and we are happy to join!

For getting a better understanding of the building we first studied the provided images and we used Google earth to get an idea of the environment. We then set up different cameras with overview and close up perspectives inside the 3d model. We also tried out different moods for the daylight with the warmth of a summer evening in mind.

Finally, we decided to focus on the perspective of an alley, looking towards a small plaza nearby. This will be the central part of our composition. We are interested in the interaction between the interior and the exterior of the building, not only structural, but also regarding the different moods of light; the warm sun-light on the outside and the cool artificial light from the light tubes inside the building.
We decided to change the material of the façade design, using panels of dark anodised aluminium. In our opinion its simple and elegant appearance creates a better contrast to the crackly brick walls and the nice patina on the surrounding old buildings.

The scenery will show an early mild summer evening. Students use the quiet time for working on their projects inside the building, whilst others walk along the alley towards the summer evening…
