When all was done i moved to the compositing phase.
Starting from the RGB pass I began to balance the image values and colors, changed the sky and opted for the second ground I rendered before. Since I was unsatisfied by the trees, I decided to add them in the post production phase as well the snow stacks near the windows and at the building base.
Then I added people and the deer in the foreground. The idea of an animal “character” was in my head since the beginning, and the inspiration comes from some photos made by a friend of mine, showing a family of deers that from time to time wander around her house in Stockholm. This particular presence is emphasised, in my work, by the look of the little girl in the midground, staring at the animal with surprise, the only one aware of its appearance.
With all elements at their place and balanced in their values, I applied some atmospheric fog using the inverted ZDepth pass, and finally applied some final color correction using Camera Raw filter and Google Nik Color EFEX.
It was a pleasure to take part of the challenge, as it gave me the chance to try something new as a snow scene, and experiment with SnowFlow plugin as well as Quixel Megascans assets. In fact the most interesting element for me, the snow, was also the one I struggled with the most, and I think I’ll going on tweaking it in the next future, as I want to produce more exterior and interior shots.
I wish to tank Tomorrow and Ronen Bekerman for the chance to compete, and for giving me the opportunity to experiment, pushing my skillset forward.

After modelling the building, I placed the camera, following the concept I had in mind. I really liked the great window of the gallery so i decided to show that side of the building. The following step was adding the exterior lamps, the trees, vegetation, snow on the roof and some snow mounds, to create visual interest and guide the viewers eye.
I then placed a dome light with a HDRi map to simulate a sky with an overcast sun. The dome light was linked to a vray sun system with a very low sun contribution, just to light more the side wall of the Museum. To test the light I made some renders with an override material. Then I placed the interior lights, a mix of planar and ies light, balanced the overall lighting setting and started to apply materials. Once satisfied with the lights, I started to apply materials. The materials set up was really simple, but I pushed it a bit more forward for the ground texture, using normal maps to simulate height change, saving resources for the displacement used instead in the snow mounds. The ground material is made by two different textures mixed by a mask in a vray blend material. It was then rendered in two different version, to have some freedom of choice. The trees were rendered apart too, to mantain flexibility in the compositing phase. The main render setup is a combination of brute force and light cache in a linear workflow. I rendered all the passes needed to composite my image such as Zdepth, ObjectID, Reflection, Refraction and so on.
Once all was done i moved to the compositing phase.

The first step approaching the challenge was to gather as many references as possible on the web.
Added to the images provided, I started crossing information to establish the measures.
It took time, but it granted me to replicate the wall covering as close as possible to reality, respecting the particular pattern that makes the building highly recognisable.
Once the inner structure has been modelled, I moved forward the wall covering, creating and duplicating (Instancing in 3ds) single boxes in rows mantaining the option to edit a single row at once.
With the entire building done I then moved on to model the terrain. I subdivided the surface, and applied a displace modifier to simulate little level changes in the terrain.

Since the beginnig of the challenge I imagined to represent my work in a winter mood. Because of the nature of the museum itself, with its dark wood covering, I directed myself to a snowy scene with a cold atmosphere, contrasting with warm interior lighting, framed by the trees of the park surrounding the building.
Moreover, choosing to represent a winter scene under the snow, adds a lot of interesting challenges to face to.
