The 7th Architectural Visualization Challenge I’m running in partnership with Quixel as the marquee sponsor. The book CABINS by Philip Jodidio and the fantastic illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi served as the principal inspiration for this year’s challenge theme. That, and my love for prefab architecture design.

Last night a friend of mine visited me in my XR space on the rooftop. We watched again…
I still remember the very first time I saw it, nearly 60 years ago. I recall us leaving the cinema silently, contemplating the beautiful imagery and trying to collect our jaws from the floor.
Little did we know back then that it was almost like a documentary from the future, not just some edgy si-fi blockbuster. Little did we know it would be much worse…

This is my concept entry for the challenge, today was the second and last time I visit the site before getting into the modelling phase, for photo references. I´ve been sketching some floor plans since last week to get a sense of the cabin and what I want to achieve.

My first idea was to place some cabins near Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosi, Mexico so you could visit the town when you are staying there. But I couldn’t find the time to visit Real de Catorce, and i’ve never been there.

Also the first concept felt too invasive so I decided to build up on this idea of “parasitic” project. I decided to place the cabin in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato since I live near and I really like going there. This would integrate the site into the project as a whole experience and not just as a retreat. San Miguel de Allende is so nice.
At first I thought of making a day of the dead festival scene since it’s one of the most amazing dates on San Miguel but it would look like a Pixar´s Coco cheap copy and time is too short now so I decided to go for that “last day there” feeling in the morning when you want to stay just one more day.
I have been studying the lines and shapes of Encuentro Guadalupe Hotel in Ensenada and Architect Miguel Montor´s Nuevo Continente school in Querétaro since I find both projects very similar to what I want to achieve and I believe they´re beautiful.

By now my main concern is being able to finish the scene and renders since time is not on my side.

I am finally done with the panoramas and wanted to upload them to yulio only problem is I can’t get the specific panorama format that yulio needs from Unreal. I only know how to get the equirectangular one. I guess this will be the final challenge to find a way to post it. Any feedback considering the final shots is of course very appreciated. Both shots are not photoshoped in any way. I decided to try my best and see what I can get from UE without posting it in PS.

Part 2 of showcasing my mostly final images.

I had a lot of fun with this project and I have been working on it consequently since the beginning of the challenge. In the end, I have made 17 renderings (some more complex, other ones focusing on the details or being some kind of trivia stuff) + 3 spherical renderings.

As the reminder: my cabins are placed in Icelandic Thórsmörk but I made a several different scenes to show various aspects of the place (from quite barren hills to lush woody areas). The cabins themselves are formed as white ephemeral monoliths, contrasting with the organic surrounding and being something between the reminiscence of the ancient dwelling built around the fireplace and the idea of Nordic gods standing in the row on a mountain ridge.

There is a chance I will yet render something in the incoming days but I feel there’s already too much of it. : ) I wish everybody a successful time with a finishing of your work!

I am getting near to completing the final images. My aim is to create realistic images using only 3d content. Really grateful for the deadline extension, as I haven’t attempted to create any VR content yet.
