Tomorrow 2019 Challenge entry by Victor Ferland

Here’s my progress on images #2 and #3, along with a quick breakdown of the steps I followed!

For the interior render I tried to find an angle that was more unique / interesting than just showing the entire room. I wanted to find a point of view that felt a bit more dramatic, and made you want to explore the rest of the library. I ended up choosing the staircase camera, which felt perfect: it gave the viewers a peak of the endless sea of books above, while showing off the interesting details of this room’s unique circular ceiling architecture.

For the third render, I ended up going back to the exterior building. I felt like the architectural details weren’t highlighted enough in the main exterior shot, and decided they deserved the spotlight in my final image. I chose a symmetrical angle using one of the bottom window as the main focus. My goal was to show the architectural ornaments with as much details as possible. I refined the 3D models of everything on this part of the building, and used natural sunlight as well as shadows from a nearby tree to create a simple, yet realistic and rich render. Hope you like it!

Here is what I have so far for the exterior image, as well as a quick breakdown of the steps I followed!

After coming up with a basic exterior lighting (created in vRay using an HDRI file), and choosing a camera angle, I started modeling some details on the building itself in 3ds Max. The 3D model provided was very simple, but with some high-quality references and a little bit of guesswork, I managed to create most of the missing ornaments and architectural characteristics fairly realistically.

I then focused on adding details to the surrounding environment, and creating basic props to fill the scene. As I was modelling everything, I was also creating and testing the different materials and finishes. Finally, I integrated various trees, shrubs, and other vegetation in the scene. (In order to save time, I didn’t create the trees myself. Most of the tree models come from VIZPARK shrubs/trees packs)

With a little bit of post-production work in photoshop, we now have a good idea of what the exterior image will look like! I still plan to fine-tune this render and add a final pass of details, characters and fine-tuning, but to make sure I meet the deadline for the challenge, I will focus on the interior views for now, and come back to this exterior render towards the end of the project.

Let me know your thoughts! 🙂

Hi all!

Started by gathering as many varied, high-resolution photo references for both the interior and exterior of the Library. The 3D model provided needs quite a bit of work, so this extensive research will help a lot with recreating all the small details and realistic finishes. I really want to get to know this piece of architecture. Gathering as much documentation on this building and its history as I can is worth my time, just to take in the feel and richness of the place.

For the mood, I’m going for an early morning, calm city mood. Not too crowded, beautyful natural light, a quiet peaceful feel. Not quite sure which camera angles I’m going to choose yet, but I started experimenting with a few points of view I thought were interesting. The project will be worked in 3ds Max, and I plan to render it using Vray. More to come soon!
