Inspired by Viking vessels and Swedish archipelago.

The wood cladding of the building reminds me of viking vessels. The issue was how to show the connection between the building, which is obviously standing on shore, and the vessel. My research brought me to the Swedish archipelago, which, in my opinion, perfectly fits my idea.

The biggest challenge for me was modeling and texturing archipelago rocks. It was not easy, I learned new techniques and immediately implemented them to my workflow. I used Zbrush for modeling landscape and textured everything inside of 3dsmax through Bercon Noise.

Thanks Ronen and Tomorrow for providing such a great challenge!

The modeling process was little tricky, instead of modeling stone by stone I decided to divide the landscape to 5 parts, and for each part I created two 8k maps (32bit displacement and 8bit normal map). I used GeometryHD in Zbrush, each part of landscape has 150 mln. polygons. I refused to use Mari, even 8k maps were not enough for decent quality texture. So, I textured everything in 3dsmax, through Bercon Noise.

I finished model of the building, and did a fast sketch of surrounding.
Building – The hardest part for me was modeling of wood cladding: since I did not have normal blueprints of facades, I used to look at reference photos and was matching them with blueprints.. Again and again. In my opinion, wood cladding is a key in this situation, it’s not just a chaos, there is a logic inside of it. For example, Architects used 5-6 modules of wood cladding which repeated steadily. Also I used Randomize Elements script, to give them more natural look.

Landscape – I gathered all information which I wanted, by downloading about 130 images. Thankfully, Swedish Archipelago is often visited by tourists. I’ve made fast sketch of surrounding in 3dsmax, for better understanding of distances and composition. For further works on landscape I will use Zbrush.

I have never been in Sweden, the only thing I knew about Sweden was SAAB. So, before making the concept, I started to study landscapes and history of Sweden/Kalmar. Instead of copying surrounding of the building, I decided to put this building to some unexpected place, of course this place should depict the rich landscape of Sweden. I was also looking for some interesting facts in history of Sweden/Kalmar, which would help me in story line. So, the most interesting part for me was that Sweden has never been in a war around 200 years, which is really unbelievable.. I dig deeper in a war history of Sweden, and as I expected it was really bloody. The nations that sacrifice the most, have strong immune not be fool again. My concept is about sacrifice, for all these people who died in war and who has paid the biggest price for peaceful life in modern times.
I’ll have two symbols in my project.
First – The pit with a small channel in opposite to entrance, which will symbolize a sacrifice.
Second – The Viking ship in zero gravity, inside of the building. Which will symbolize peace. Overall, this building reminds me viking vessel with its dark wood and cladding.

I understand that this concept is too complex for this challenge and I didn’t have an opportunity to put interior scene. So, I made a decision to finish this project in two steps. For Tomorrow Challenge short description with one exterior image should be enough. For my portfolio I will add all interior images with full description.
