Here is my final entry for “The Phoenix”. This challenge was ofcourse one of the most different and interesting ones I have taken up since it involves designing and visualizing both the old and the new converted structure. The new design revolves around not stripping the ruins of its historic image but at the same time breathing new life into it. The journey that the Smiths are going to step into here on has been depicted in few of the design elements used. To create an interest to the subject, I leave it to the viewer’s imagination to find the connection between the old and the new. Hope you all like it!

The Work Process of this project involves a lot of brain storming sessions since everything has to be designed from scratch ! The most challenging as well as the interesting part is to imagine from the story’s character’s point of view, of how the old workshop might have withstood all these years, the small things that the family would have loved to keep as memories that were once a part of the workshop, the surrounding landscape and green cover. So, I started off by preparing rough concept sketches of how I imagined the structure might have looked.
Then I began collecting reference images of all the different elements that I will be adding.
First of, I started modelling the tree that’s part of the old workshop, with a reference from a real one. Enjoy the Work Process of it below.
I started modeling the basic shape of the tree in 3dsMax using the reference images. Then I unwrapped it and did the detailing in Mudbox.

CONCEPT :
The Smiths were keen on preserving parts of what is left behind of their family’s bygone workshop – portions of the crumblings walls, the trees that still stand strong inside, ruins of a boat since they loved boating and the landscape engulfing the property.
All that the Smiths envisioned to me was, to not strip the ruins of its historic integrity and to retain as much of the original feel of the space as possible.
I was immediately drawn to this sensitive scheme of recreating a family’s visions into reality. This in particular is going to be a challenge and responsibility, breathing a new life into an old structure. My journey of this conversion project begins…

LOCATION AND SITE :
The beautiful property is surrounded by lush greenery and farm lands, a small canal located adjacent with the backwaters running below the front portion of the property. The dilapidated structure takes form of the natural ground level which slopes to the rear.

BRIEF:
This conversion project is purely my imagination. I will be designing the old and the new structure from scratch. The images posted have been used as references for the design process. I will soon be posting initial concept sketches of the old structure with snippets of its modeling and taking the work progress from there!
