Robot’s Head

A bridge from the future to the past. Business and cultural center, arts quarter and history museum, enclosed in a glass castle, where the remains of the ruins of the Royal Castle are kept.
The history of the city and some of its parts is of great value, the combination of times as an asset in the form of two objects with a sad fate. The royal castle, badly damaged during the war, was a symbol of Königsberg, its most important building dominant. After the region became part of the USSR and the city was renamed Kaliningrad, the authorities decided to demolish the ruins of the castle, for political reasons there was no question of restoring it. 20 years later, Soviet architect Lev Misozhnikov designed the House of Soviets to manage the Kaliningrad Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and in the 70s its construction began on the site where the castle was located.
For various reasons, the construction of the building was not completed, becoming another symbol of the city, but already the city of Kaliningrad. For its bizarre shape, similar to a “robot’s head” sticking out of the ground, the city dwellers gave this name to this building. For several years, the House of Soviets never found its purpose, being empty in the very heart of Kaliningrad.
In my project, I created a solution that, in my opinion, could give this building a second life and remind about history – from the symbol of Konigsberg to the symbol of Kaliningrad.

Ordinary Beauty

Concept

I imagine this project as a new heart beating center for the city.
Community is the center of these visuals. The message and the story I wanted to tell are not the architecture itself. The scheme is meant to surround and frame people’s stories and feelings.
It is not about outstanding offered services or modern and beautiful infrastructures, but how the new amazing area will inspire and change people who are living there, who are working there and who engage with it.

People having a relaxing time into the park, enjoying the sunshine on a beautiful Saturday morning. A model having a photo shoot for a magazine inside the awesome Vessel, inspirational design building which is the iconic face of the Masterplan. Some friends are enjoying life after a long day on a roof terrace with a fantastic panoramic view, enhancing the beauty and magic of lighting.

Sunshine through nature. A night in the sky. Eccentric fashion.
These are the main themes I’ve explored within these visuals to tell a story about the Scheme and how beautiful it could be to interact and engage with it.

Get there. Get inspired. Eat and drink all the beauty.

Atlantis 2040

GOALS

My main goal when creating images of NYC of 2040 was to create attractive and imagination arousing vision. At the same time I asked myself: ‘what can I offer to people from the future to make their lives better, considering the fact that man is moving further away from the nature he comes from, being in conflict with her, occupying larger and larger areas for development and arable fields. Currently, cultivated fields occupy an area the size of South America. This foreign to nature, artificial environment has been created and developed for several thousand years. Process of transition from nomadism to settlement and food production began about 10,000 BC. Agriculture has led us to the place where we are now, place where industrialized agriculture can produce more than enough food to meet the needs of the world population (assuming equal availability and no waste), which currently stands at around 7.6 billion. Despite the important role agriculture has played in human history, has created many problems over the years.
Cutting down forests, creating space for arable land, man has largely deformed the environment. The heavily reduced number of forests reduced carbon absorption capacity of our planet, at the same time we extract it from the ground and burn it, releasing quickly into the carbon cycle resources removed from it by nature for tens and hundreds of millions of years. With industrialization, development of communication and food preservation technology, distance between source and recipient has increased dramatically, and ties between cities and food production has weakened. For many years there was a conviction that food production and the idea of clean, hygienic and modern cities are mutually exclusive. Local production has disappeared and agriculture has become oriented towards global markets. Food is often transported to consumers from thousands of kilometers away, generating large amounts of CO2. Pesticides and fertilizers that can cause water and soil pollution are another environmental risk. In addition, agriculture is estimated to account for 70% of the world’s drinking water consumption

SOLUTION

What is the solution to make life of citizens better and reduce the ecological footprint of human activity? The answer can be network of vertical farms that refers to the concept of agrourbanism (including the Garden City of Ebenezer Howard), whose main postulate was to bring together the natural and urban environment in order to create an eco-city. The project assumes creating a network of farms producing food on the existing urban green as well as degraded areas.
The essence of this project is the production of food based on a closed- loop production, analogical to cycles occurring within the biosphere, which rely on the circulation of elements. These cycles have no beginning and no end, all elements are in constant motion, changes their form, but their sum is unchanged in time, because in nature there is no waste. Just like the cycles that we can observe in nature, the closed-loop of food production should re-use all raw materials, including municipal waste. All farms forming a coherent production network have been connected by a monorail suspended above the street level, which, alongside passenger transport, provides freight transport. Good communication makes raw materials, products and waste constantly in motion, and farms complement each other, creating one dynamically functioning organism.
Designed production facilities are the basic source of supply of agricultural products for citizens. We already know the most important technologies for the success of this vision. We know the hydroponic and aeroponic method needed to grow plants in multi-storey structures. According to estimates, one unit of internal surface supported by appropriate technologies is able to produce as much food as 10-20 outdoor units cultivated in a traditional way. In addition to economic and pro-environmental functions, agritecture is an undeniable social value. Public gardens will encourage the creation of local communities with strong ties. Positive reorganization of social life will help to unlock the potential of the inhabitants. The level of education will increase, and consumers will turn into co-creators.

Final – Sunken city

There are two worlds. After sea has risen, technology enabled us to build new, safe city environment above the ground, using massive platforms. Whole system of the city is driven by AI, and it takes care of everything. We let it take over, and many of us became obsolent. New challenge in this world is to find your calling. The Individual cult from 20 century took a hit. As it turns out, we are not so special, we are just another species.

The new world on platforms- modern, technology driven world, where human input is minimal. There are people living, but they are connected to technology in a degree that obscure real human interaction. They became soulles bodies who live in a VR world. Everyone is alone. Algorhytms can guide them throuhg their lives with ease, so they let AI to dictate their every move.

The old world – After flooding, swamp like environment is a home for many people who didnt make it to new world…mostly janitors who clean the water. After Few years from floods, This world became jungle like place, and is important source of oxygen after many of the land forest were destroyed…

New world doesnt care for the old one, yet it could not exist without it.

Story told in my entry images is about a man called Oliver, who is a janitor in the old world. His dream was to make it to the new world and make his life better.
He idolizes the world up there, and is obsessed with the idea that the life there is so easy. But people from swamp, arent allowed up.
Luckily, one day, package drone used in the city crashed in the water. Oliver finds it and decide to return it to the city…That’s his way through Vessel, the only way up in NY.

Vessel, structure that used to be a sign of advancement, art and technology is now nothing more than a reminder of the past….For Oliver though, it was much more, it was a gate to the future, connecting the two worlds.

When he finaly reaches his life goal and gets to the city, he was amazed by the technology. He starts his new life, better one.
He couldn’t comprehend the complexity of this environment, he is a simple folk after all. The reality is, no one could. Many tried, chasing the technology advancement, but we couldn’t compete with AI.

“We stayed behind, and we shouldn’t chase for something that we cannot reach. We do things we are not built for. This world is twisted, upside down logic, where we left the things we were good at and emotions are not present. ” – last note in diary , 05.17.2041 a.d.

Irony in the story is that Oliver was chasing for something he wanted, yet it wasnt something he actualy needed.

Image 1 : Desire
“There are two worlds we are living in, i can recall the old days, now it seems like a dream. I am stuck in this swamp. I wonder what the world up there is like. I heard there are still a few of us. it must be awesome. “

Oliver spends a lot of time thinking about the “above” world. He is new era janitor, cleaning up waters under the platforms.
One day he will leave this place and visit the better one up there.

Image 2 – Struggle
Oliver found a way up through the Vessel, one of few things left to remind the old city. Oliver struggles to authorize himself, until he finds a broken drone who must have fallen from the city. He comes to return it.

“It was not easy to persuade watchers, but i found a package drone, that is my way up.”

Image 3 – Summit
Oliver reach the top! He finally did it. It seem very strange to him, because he doesn’t know how the “new stuff” works. He realizes that he doesn’t belong in this place.
Multiple mental states of Oliver captured in one picture, showing the stages from amazement, realization to regret and enlightement.

HUYA (final entry)

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT

I decided to focus on developing of Western Yards. There were 4 main ideas in the architectural concept:
1. I aimed to avoid the temptation to use “futuristic” architecture as much as possible. The shift in architecture between 2040 and 2020 will be about the same as the shift between 2020 and 2000.
2. In recent years, European architects have been designing more and more often in New York. I assume that the European trend will only increase in the future, so I decided to move away from the classic New York skyscraper and use European architects with an international name as reference.
3. I used the classic New York grid in plan to fit the design into the fabric of the city
4. A very important reference was the work of Superstudio

TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS

In order to better understand what New York looks like, I decided to watch the «Suits» series (and it is awesome). There were several aerials shots with cool view on Manhatten in each episode. And it inspired me to show project from different perspectives, including aerials.
From the very beginning of the project, I knew that I would make a lot of wide shots and bird-views, so I needed to quickly create an environment model. I decided to model the whole environment (even use railclone) – smacks of madness, so I decided to look for workarounds. My research led me to understand that with Blender and very basic programming, I can get a part of the model out of Google maps. Since this is a non-profit project, Google’s license doesn’t prohibit this (trust me, I watched 3 seasons of «Suits», which is almost the same as getting a bachelor’s degree in law)
All buildings of the HUYA project are modeled using railclone. This gives you a freedom to change the architecture and layout during the project and allows you to keep 3d scene light and comfortable to work with.

«Lighthouses»

This image is inspired by one of my favourite movies «The Lighthouse» (2019)

«Smog and flamingos»

This picture is an ode to my love for Superstudio (est. 1966–1978)
Adolfo Natalini wrote in 1971 “…if design is merely an inducement to consume, then we must reject design; if architecture is merely the codifying of bourgeois model of ownership and society, then we must reject architecture; if architecture and town planning is merely the formalization of present unjust social divisions, then we must reject town planning and its cities…until all design activities are aimed towards meeting primary needs. Until then, design must disappear. We can live without architecture…»
It seemed ironic to rethink their great and radical “anti-architecture” into something closer to reality and even commercial. It is interesting to observe how their ideas of “architecture of the monument”, “architecture of the image”, and “technomorphic architecture”, translated into reality, completely lose their radicalism and, at the same time, a significant part of their original meaning, reducing only to aesthetics.
The dense smog that is present on this and firther images is a reminder that 2040 may not be about robots and flying cars, but about environmental problems if we do not change our attitude to environmental issue.
I like this picture because it is quite simple, and at the same time it perfectly conveys the essence of the project.

«Poster 1»

The main reference was a poster for the Fritz Lang’s movie «Metropolis» (1926), which was created by Boris Bilinsky
Each project should have a name. Especially project in NY. Word «HUYA» is composed of first letters – HUdson YArds.
Initially, I had doubts whether to post this picture as one of 3 main pictures or not. But I just like it too much.

«Grid»

In this picture I wanted to emphasize the facade architecture with creating the illusion of an «endless» grid by reflecting the facade in the water. I’ve decided to play with scale by having «endless» grid and small but very bright person in the middle of the image.
There is still a hint of Superstudio, but the main reference was the work of David Chipperfield.

«Red circle»

This image is inspirated by photoproject «ALTERNATIVES LANDSCAPES» (2012) by Benoit Paille.

«The Weather Project»

Image is inspired by installation «The Weather Project» which Olafur Eliasson has created in 2003. And ofcourse I did not miss the opportunity to pay tribute to the brilliant «Blade runner 2049» (I really wanted to not do this in this project in order to avoid any references to the «futuristic» future, but I could not resist).
This image supports topic of air pollution which I started in image 2/9.

«Drone»

Initially, I wanted to add drones in this project, because I am sure that in the 2040m delivery by drones will play an important role. However, I decided to do it less straightforward. I wanted to create a flying drone feel in this picture without showing the drone itself.
Another important element is the texture of the render itself. Render noise differs from film noise and ISO noise in photos. But it also has its own aesthetics.
For some time I have been reflecting on the fact that the texture of paints in painting and film noise in photography have long been important elements of artistic expression. While at CG we are still trying to hide the texture while we are trying to disguise our work as a «perfect photography».

«Plastic and whales»

I did not want to create a picture of a post-apocalyptic flooded city. I wanted to give a feeling of weird dream. When real objects meet those that cannot be there.
Water plays a big role in this project (water in the park and a view of the river). In this picture I wanted to hyperbolize this connection. I wanted to show turbid water (which still does not lose its beauty) as a continuation of the previously mentioned pollution topic.
This picture is not some kind of manifesto or appeal. This is a strange dream of an ordinary resident of HUYA. After this dream, he wakes up and decides that it is time to sort plastic a little more carefully.

«Poster 2»

This is a view from the Vessel on the opposite bank.
This is an experiment about balance between abstract emotions and concrete facts.
Formally, the picture shows Western Yard’s buildings and the view, but in reality it does not show anything. As well as it gives accurate data about the areas in this project, however, in reality, these data seem totally abstract to us.
