CABINS / sebregall : THE BOW HOUSE

When I started to work on that challenge, I thought it would be easy and quick to create a simple hut in the woods… But it turned out to become pretty more complex after a few days of reflexion and modeling ! At that point I virtually jumped into not only an archviz contest, but a real architecture and design competition.

THE PROJECT :
I finally designed a complete house, able to host a whole family and occasional guests for weekends and vacations, and all along the year.
I chose to locate it into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, in front of an altitude lake, and backed onto a slope, so as to enjoy the most breathtaking view during the whole day.
Its grounded basement is made out of three 40ft modified shipping containers. This allows to store all the technical equipment of the house, but also all the leisure and outdoor stuff that goes with the house, plus extra beds for the guests.
On the top of it, a second structure made out of wood hosts the living room with a kitchen, and the upper floors. These ones are split in 2 clear areas : the back one for the kids, and the front one for the parents, both linked by a common bathroom. The kids dispose of a nice playground, while the parents have a lightful workplace on their side.
Thanks to a generous height, each side has also it own mezzanine, allowing the kids to have a “cabin into the cabin”, from where they can observe nature on the back side of the mountain, and the parents to enjoy a high placed bedroom up above the lake.
The small roof is accessible from the inside, and serve as an observation point.
Two massive decks surround the frontzone, giving sunlight on the top, and shadow on the bottom.

THE WORKFLOW :
I modelled the whole house into Sketchup, and imported it into Lumion 8.3, into which I was able to create the context from scratch and then scatter it with the internal libraries.
I made a full 3D environment, which allowed me to make a video showing almost every part of the house, and on the other hand reduce consequently the post-processing phase and totally skip a 2D compositing pass. I rendered everything with a single Alienware workstation.

THE FINAL RENDERS :
I made 3 major still images as required, plus 7 bonus views. Completed by 3 VR points in Yulio : https://www.yulio.com/dOa0G8PScm, and a video on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzhYmx1KroE

I want to thank Ronen for this challenge topic, which made me so enthusiastic about, as I’ve always been a great fan of cabins making in my childhood. But it has also been a great occasion to conceive and develop a concept involving prefabrication and quick construction processes.
I also want to congratulate the competitors, as many of the entries are very impressive…
So, good luck to everybody, and may the best one win !

CABINS / sololander : Cabins Submission

I ended up changing the light and mood of my project a lot since i was traveling around scenic country sides which inspired me a brand new feel for storytelling. I discovered a sense of happiness in the midst of a brief moment in time which is just after a light snowfall or rain right at the dusk. This is what i tried to capture in my work here with the cabin entry.Hope you guys enjoy looking at it as much as i did 🙂 Looking forward to see amazing moments all of you created for the same..

The inspiration for the cabin was to imagine a place where one could be simultaneously connected to the land, sky and water. The cabin acts as a ‘viewing vessel’ by framing a unique view through each of its main apertures: one to the land, one to the sky and one to the water. The landscape was inspired by the mountains and coasts of British Columbia where one might see vast mountain lakes, lush forests and the occasional glimpse of the northern lights.

The cabin was modeled in Rhino and imported into Lumion where a combination of Lumion and Quixel assets populate the landscape. Some light post-processing in Photoshop helped with final tweaks as well as adding a few furry friends here and there. The Quixel assets were immensely helpful in adding that next layer of realism to the scenes.

Thanks to Ronen and the sponsors for putting on such a great and accessible challenge, it was a good opportunity to step into the realm of GPU rendering.

CABINS / mohd_ateff : The free folks

Through their traditional migration routes that carved out through the centuries, he guided me between the desert valleys and dunes. For hours I saw nothing, heard nothing, yet through the dusty storm something gleams and shines, I look at the nomad’s smiling eyes through the slit in his headdress as he whispers “this one is for the free folks”.

Concept Reminder:
Introducing a cabin or a group of cabins for the desert travelers, these cabins would attract and accommodate wanderers of the Sahara deserts as a tourism attraction point. Inspired by the unique rock and desert formation of the Algerian desert (Hoggar Mountains) and its rich heritage spots to create a group of cabins in its beautiful rocky scenery.

This project was an amazing learning experience that introduced me to a variety of new assets and techniques. For this project I rendered 3 still images (using 3ds max and unity 3D for modeling and Lumion 3d for rendering) while the VR is yet to be uploaded. The project contains a group of cabins that is excavated in the mountains, and on top of those mountains is a chilling spot that contains a swimming pool, restaurant and a star gazing chamber.

CABINS / sebregall : THE BOW HOUSE

The shape of the building is fixed, so as the relief and the context.
Indoors are being decorated and outdoors scattered (almost continuesly!)
Render settings are almost done… but might change as well…

Still work to do on lighting, but fun part of it is about to begin !

Next entry will be the final one.
Til then, do it well CG bros 😉
