ABOUT ME

Karim Mousa's Egyptian ethnicity led to many "descendant of the Pharoah" jokes in the five years he lived in Bergen, Norway working for the highly regarded design studio Mir. If only his colleagues had known his true claim to fame as a former international Taekwondo champion... Karim has lived abroad for more than a decade as he was based in Dubai for six years before Bergen, developing architectural work for global project design consultancies such as Dar Al-Handasah. Today, Karim is still kicking the martial arts sandbag and using his powers of art direction and worldly experience to bring unbuilt architecture to life via his visual design experiences and explorative approaches.

The Taekwondo Fighters life is no ordinary life, its a life that holds a continuous spark that lights, inspires and aspires dreams and imaginations. Taekwondo for them isn’t just a sport, its a way of life, life full of courage, discipline, honor and passion. They live their days mastering techniques with their heart, soul, and body. Their world has a different dimension of spiritual and physical balance. They fight all the odds, they strive to be the very best, they give it all their strength, all their power, all their love, all their sadness, everything they’ve got, they face pain, they rise and fall, they win and they loose. Their dreams, thoughts, and deep into their core soul wants to achieve something they’ve always dreamed of and wished for. Each fighter is giving his absolute best, aiming for their finest day to come. The Championships is their ultimate goal where they try to seize this moment of greatness that will ever be carved in their’s and everyone else’s heart. To give their best performance and win a medal for themselves, for their country and for their family and friends. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from or even how strong you are, its much more than that, its strategy, technique, courage, speed, power etc… all combined together to form this artfully unique, Olympic sport.

I had the privilege to live some of these moments and be part of this amazing sport. It has been an incredible life experience that will always be carved inside me.

Technical info.

The intent behind this project/design and series of visuals is to present a few moments from the fighter’s competition experiences. I have designed the sport
arena’s lines, shapes, and features to reflect some of the Taekwondo aesthetics like Motion, dynamism, speed and sleekness…..

Since the outbreak of the civil war in march 2011, millions of Syrians have fled their homes heading to an unknown future. Determined the moment they crossed their country’s border. A border used to be a wall that protects but today it became a drawn line on a map that defines who you are and determines futures.

The design approach is to take the border back to what it used to be, a symbol of protection and provide a sustainable framework for the refugees to once again become citizens. by planting their own food, and building their own homes and let them have the opportunity to define what the border will be like and place an entire nation that has its citizens lives on the edge, back to the edge.

The Tropical Garden by ZAS Architects/Dubai is a botanical forest environment designed to surprise, educate and delight. Inspired by the pistachio, the tropical indoor forest sits inside adjoining transparent oval glass shells, on a large reflective pond on the mall’s rooftop. Visible from adjacent entertainment areas, dynamic pistachio shapes are mirrored and reflected on the surrounding surface. A contemporary honeycomb glass facade allows sunlight to penetrate into the deepest levels of the botanical garden’s temperature-controlled environment.

Visually unique, the dome’s structural frame represents a growing tree and the natural cycle of life. Verdant and green, the frame shapes the interior forest, with roots growing deep into the earth at lower levels and large leafy tree branches animating and shaping the upper levels. Digital 3D mapping of animals animate surfaces of trees and vegetation throughout.
