I am torn between a cabin in the woods and a cabin in the frozen wilderness. I decided to try a feel experiments using Megascan assets for any foliage. I was hoping the tests would yield a favourite but as much as I like the detail of the foliage, I am drawn towards the high contrast bleakness of the frozen wilderness setting.

Well, the lighting is stationary so I’m planning on using dynamic direct lighting for the environment and foliage (by setting it all to ‘Movable’) and using lightmass to light the direct and indirect lighting for the interior. Currently there is no LPV (which I think looks poor close up) nor DFAO in these scenes. I am hoping to avoid turning it on but it is there as an option if things look wrong. Additionally, I have the escape route of lighting channels if I need to fake a few things.

Ahhh I see, what I meant was the work so far was fully dynamically lit but I don’t think I can create high enough visual quality to compete with offline renders if I don’t inject a little baked lighting into the scene. My plan was to use lighting channels to apply dynamic lighting to the landscape and foliage whilst using static or stationary lights to create the lighting inside the cabin. I did have a few thoughts on the time of day setting. If I go for an evening setting I might be able to get away with just dynamic lighting as the contrast between the inside and outside will be very harsh and bounced light might not be required for the “look” I might go for. It’s all just speculation at the moment as I need to block out my scene with cabin and local environment – which i”ll be working on this weekend.
