Default MarvelousDesigner (cloth simulation) short review

    hello,

recently I came across this software Marvelous Designer - 3D Clothing Community and Marketplace specialized in cloth creation and simulation.Curious as I'm always in regard to new software solutions I gave it a try as they offer a fully functional demo.

Must say Im quite impressed by the logic it uses as well as the cloth simulation itself.
making cloth items is very intuitive, you draw the cloth pieces(patterns) and stitch them together using the 2d representation just as a tailor would do it .Than assign cloth properties and run the sim.

And the simulation is one of the strongest points. It works so fast and without issues like self intersections.compared to what I could use in my main 3d app this is a real mile forward.
Cloth is applied to an "avatar".By default the avatar is a human figure, but you can import any kind of geometry you like and use that for attaching cloth.

As I see the software is primarily intended for the fashion / cloth design industry. But I figure it can come very handy also to us doing viz as making custom (even complicated) cloth items or parts is very easy.

So here are 2 examples, stuff I made straight after downloading, without any learning other than watching some of the many video tuts available.
For the armchair I made the base mesh in c4d exported as .obj and once imported I covered it with cloth.
The bathrobe/raincoat was made entirely in MD2. Using a simple pattern design I made the coat, than I hang it using some imported geometry as "avatar".

browsing the net I came across videos showing similar kind of software, but the ease of use and quality of the results is by far the best I have seen.

Be sure to check it yourself as I didnt had to chance to dive deep and from what I see it is capable of a lot more than I stated.

    cheers

    Hi, Kizo.

I was a bit surprised to see marvelous designer here =))) to say at least.

I tried this pacage together with girlfriend of mine - she was interested in making some paterns and look how they would come out afterwards.

I have to admint that the ease of useing this pacage is outstanding!

There's one more function that could be really valuable - You can animate those simulations =) just haven't tried to export them =) - don't even know if \it's possible, but i bielieve so.

The armchair is simply outstanding! Could You give us some more details about it (maybe a wireframe, poly count, mapping/shading details)?..

    Hi,

    Niiiiice !!
I used to design and sew some military gears (vests, pouches, backpacks) few years ago... If I've had something like that to design paterns it would have saved me a lot of time and fabric lost in prototypes ! (cordura's not cheap )

Anyway downloaded it and at first sight looks like it has a lot of potential ! Thanks for sharing it Kizo!

I must say, this is a very impressive piece of software, I love the interactive interface its amazing how fast the physics works, and I knew it was just a matter of time until somebody would use it for furniture modeling, absolutely amazing quality!

Great work on that chair. - It looks like another piece of software one should learn, but don't have the time for...!

BTW - what a kinky bathrobe...!? A little fetish of yours !??
