    Default vray DOF...

    hi all,

I'm trying to achieve the depth of field effects that so many people use in animations now. Red Vertex for example make a lot of use of it.

I have not been able to figure out how to implement this using 3ds max 2010 and Vray. Can someone please assist?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Hi, you can not find a tutorial on google or youtube? there are many.

    YouTube - VRAY 1.5 : Depth Of Field 1.5 rc2

use the physical camera in vray of course.

I have looked for tutorials yes.

All those tutorials I can find on youtube are not high enough resolution to be able to see what is going on.

Also, I can do dof for 1 frame but I can't seem to animate the dof. I just wanted a few simple steps to be outlined.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

    Hi pnhatton,
well seems to me you could use some additional help. The point in DOF settings is that you have to use Vray physical camera to achieve effect and the settings with that camera you should test yourself with targeting simple objects on your scene.

here is the link (Maxwell render though, but the point is in camera settings) that you could use for observation logic within any real camera.

    dof tool

Unfortunately, there is no universal solution if you're searching for one.
If you need some extra help, mail me!

    cheers

    Thanks for your message isucur.

The problem I'm finding is not that I can't get DOF but that when I change the focal length in the VRay physical camera, it changes the part of the model which I see in the viewport. I want the view to stay the same but for the blur to change, like you would do with the focus on a normal camera.

    Does that makes sense?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Hi Paul, yes, that is ok..
to simplify things here is small scene with parameters we were talking about, hope you could find this useful.

    simple dof scene

Change focus distance only, other parameters of camera leave untouched..
(Small tip: while changing focus distance observe camera focus change in top viewport).

    Cheers

    Ivo,

That is amazingly helpful. Thanks for sending over the scene.

Great to see your "Making of..." article as well.

    Thanks,
    Paul
