Great Challenge!


To me the NN is always a place of nostalgia and calm.

So I think I´ll try not to catch the event itself, (still have to figure out what it was) but the special mood at the morning after a really great event, this special feeling when the magic is gone, only parts and bits of it everywhere, ready for cleanup, but the NN is very calm and peaceful, somehow retrospective……..I am always thinking of an aged diva after a party in the wild 50s, makeup is gone, but the spirit is there…………..

Ok, I should stop talking philosophical bullshit………..:-)

So...
just found the first time to think a little bit more about my concept, and decided to alter the theme a little bit to combine maxwell´s realism with a little touch of surrealism...I still asume that it is the day after an event. For this I found inspiration in the work "butterfly swarm" from Marc Koeschinger



So as a first step i will try to populate the NN with thousands of abstract white paper butterflies

But in my fiction, on the morning after the event all the butterflies are coming to live and are trying to escape back to nature. Inspired a little bit by the monarch migration in mexico



I think i will introduce the living butterflies step by step in a series of shots where more and more butterflies are real. At the moment I think it will be four shots:

(sorry, proportions in sketches are totally off.....i was a little bit in hurry)

1. Calm
Closeup Indoor Shot with only paper butterflies in a dreamy morning light atmosphere - Everything is still fine


2. Inition of Chaos
Indoor Shot. First real butterflies are introduced. Also some "dead" Paper-Butterflies....maybe a Butterfly-Catcher who tries to catch the few visible butterflies.....


3. Break-Out
Close Outdoor Shot. Things are starting to get wild. (wild angle shot) The NN is completely full of thousands of butterflies and the first ones are outside. Maybe running woman with flowers "chased" by butterflies.


4. Freedom
very peasefull outdoor shot. The wohle swarm is in the air. staring, happy people on the ground.



In the next steps I will modell the paper- and the real butterflies. Remodel and detail parts of the NN and do the texturing work.......unfortunately i don´t have Realflow for the swarm ....so I suppose, that I have to do it manually....arghh

stefan what 3d program are you using for this?

mainly sketchup. But I can use Rhino in a friends office for special parts

damn i am too slow.....and i start to hate butterflies

first in scene material test......still much work to do

another swarm test......just realized that butterflies usually are tiny...and the NNG is not....






(about 15.000 buts in the shot (much more in the scene!).....and I don´t think that it will work out, or at least is worth the effort.. :-(

thank you peter. Excact the right time for an virtual kick in my but(t). I still try to overcome the limitations of my computer, sketchup and myself...but at least I still try

...not really pretty, but first time that i managed to implement a larger amount of buts in the scene (they are still quite repetitiv)

looking great! the motion blur on the butterflies looks great too.

Once you have the final camera angle you could potentially split your scene into different files and render more butterflies in the different files and comp them back in in the final image if you start having memory issues.
