This limitation was a good thing for me, i'm not sure i would have the idea to slice a mesh like i did if i have could use fully 3D splines 
Btw, here is an update for my previous image, and final submition.

First of all i have to say that Railclone from Itoo soft is just a great tool for every architectural designer!
This is my entry to the contest... i hope you'll like it!
Done it with 3ds max rendered with vray post pro with photoshop.
From the railclone plug in i use industrial pipe1 and from railings interior metal handrail1.
