    Default SpeedTree?

Does anyone have any experience with SpeedTree? I read about it here: Welcome to CGarchitect.com and it seems pretty intense (used for Avatar, etc.). Although the cost is quite high for solo freelancers, it looks very powerful!

    Welcome,

Can you show some examples of what you do with SpeedTree? are you in Game / Film production?

SpeedTree used to have a normal price and 3dsmax plugin back in the days of version 1, 2 and 3 i think... but they didn't look good vs. Onyx for example - not for archviz.

I guess the developers made the right choice, shifting focus towards real-time game play and film production were the big money is. I hope it can now make it's way back to our field in scaled down version since we surly not need all the features they provide, Just being able to use the library, model custom trees and export to 3dsmax to be rendered as still images or animation.

Watching the SpeedTree videos just now, it seems like the best solution for making trees I've seen for a long time - Also the most expensive :-)

unfortunately i cannot show anything from my work I work in the game industry but i have tried rendering an arch viz with "low poly" trees from speedtree. Which looks fine! You could offcourse use millions of polys for a tree but i don't think you will see the difference if you use the trees as background objects.
The great thing about the software is the ability to very quickly make tons of variations for your trees. And also custom build one if you need something special in the foreground of your render etc.

It's a great tool although it could still be better and cheaper. Especially the licensing terms are "stupid".

I'm hoping they release just the Modeler at some point so that it could be more accessible to arch. viz freelancers/small firms. I sure don't need the source code or the real-time integration stuff, I just want to make pretty trees!

Maybe if we make enough noise they'll tell us what they've got planned...
