Thumbs up smallGPU render from LUXRENDER exporter & test scene

    Hi all,

This is my first thread here.

I want to present you an hybrid gpu unbiased render. it's under development and in pre-alpha stadium... it work with openCL but it's a small, smart and a nice free application.

I'm talking about smallLux GPU from Luxrender.

    Luxrender.net

to download the application and the exporter for 3ds max, sketchup and blender normally you must register. but I have uploaded the file to an external mirror... so you can try it before to join!

I'm not a developer of Luxrender and/or smallLux gpu but only one enthusiastic user.

    IMPORTANT

For those wondering why the program is currently only available on a section of the LuxRender forum that requires registration I'd like to add some clarification.

Development is deliberately kept low key for the moment, mostly for two reasons: casual users might get a bad impression as at the moment it is not straightforward to install and use the program and the developers would rather spend time on developing than on providing user support for a pre-alpha product. Please note that this thread was started by an enthusiastic user, not by any of the LuxRender developers.

While SmallLuxGPU is rapidly developing as a useful tool, it is mostly intended as a test case for GPU acceleration of LuxRender, which is planned for LuxRender 0.8. After the release of LuxRender 0.7 (most likely later this year) integration of LuxRender and SmallLuxGPU will start. Consequently, it is uncertain if SmallLuxGPU will evolve into a finished, polished and documented program before that point. If it does, we'll make sure to announce it here. And in any case we will keep you posted about future releases of LuxRender.
So please don't go to forum for some support at time... but go there if you want to help... to pinpoint some bugs etc.

I also upload a small scene selection exported from varius 3d software in smallLux format. after installation, just run one of batch file that can be find in it... smallLux will start with rendering the selected scene. have fun!

this scene are only demonstrative, it show the potential of smallLux... but for some kind of scene it's just ready to deliver a good result!

the link below is to download the " test scene package " to run under smallLux gpu.

scenes_smallLUX_GPU.rar - download now for free. File sharing. Software file sharing. Free file hosting. File upload. FileFactory.com

The link below is for the application, the 3ds max exporter and the sketchup exporter! the max exported is developed by Losbellos and the exporter for sketchup from Exvion.

I also created a *.mzp for installing the exporter for 3ds max.
    max version: 9 - 2008 - 2009 - 2010 - not fully supported 2011

smallLUX_and_exporter.zip - download now for free. File sharing. Software file sharing. Free file hosting. File upload. FileFactory.com

Well if you like... play first with the scene... and than setup your scene in max to export.

I hope I did not have forget something! but I will post other info!

    IMPORTANT

You will also need the proper drivers for your card and OS. If you are using an NVidia card, the OpenCL sdk in included in the driver package. If you are using ATI, you will also need to download the ATI Stream SDK 2.1.

PS: report and don't forget to say thank you!

Looking nice, and good to know its free. Shame I have no computer spec for an unbiased engine.

    hi Javi,
the nice thing of smallLux gpu is that it's hybrid.
It run also with no gpu capable graphic card... you only need to put openCL.dll in Luxrender folder.

for example the exporter for max is developed by Losbellos, for my own use a create the mzp to automated the installation process of it.
to test the mzp.. I install it on a laptop with 1Gb of ram and with a sys graphic card that use part of the 1Gb of the ram. and it work... slow but work

you can try it by downloading the packed application, the exporter and the test scenes from the mirror where I had uploaded all. simply run a *.bat file.
I do that since you need a registration to the forum to read and download all! and forn non user it's very difficult to orient in the forum!

    someone had just try it?

I've watched it develop over the past 6 months and gave it a spin several times. It's a f$$$$$g brilliant piece of software. They're implementing some very new render techniques (Stochastic Progressive Photon Mapping) which look very promising. The recent level of integration with Blender via Telnet is just amazing, making Blender + SLG function just like VrayRT (moving the camera/sun/changing materials in Blender updates the SLG rendering in real-time).

Even at this alpha stage, people have cranked out some animations with it in the space of a few hours, with things like DOF and motionblur all integrated.

    hi all,

since Wednesday a new version of the exporter for 3ds max is done!

this version is able to connect 3ds max with smallLuxGPU trough telnet connection...

at time only RT material changes are possible.... the version is unstable..

I upload all files smallLuxGPU + telnet + 3ds max exporter.zip and are downloable from:

    Code:
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/b28hdc3/n/smallLuxGPU_telnet_3ds_max_exporter.zip
the zip contain a demo video how it work, installation instruction... for any problem, bug etcc... please go to

    Code:
    http://www.luxrender.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=3760&start=140#p43264
please go to the above link... and read the discussion to get it work correctly.

and report... you must be registered... all zipped file are download-able from the above link...

    Looks good, and free!
But I keep getting error when trying to to the max exporter plugin for max 2009 64bit, it gives me error and nothing happens, I had to remove the scripts from folder in order to start max again.

Oh, wait, I thought it was about LuxRender, is it different software?

    that's right.... they are different...
Luxrender is like fryrender and smallLux is like Arion!

unfortunately the error you get is related to to the exporter version for 3ds max 2009... the coder have no way to understand whats wrong with this version!

any way if you have the possibility to install max 2010 or 2011... the exporter work well! it's not fully implemented but near by!

ask if you have other questions!

I see, thanks for clarification, its really amazing how fast it is all advancing, this GPU rendering technique is becoming very popular, and with this free software it will be amazing. But I might go with Octane renderer because it looks pretty stable right now, and works well with max 2009, also maybe vray will catch up soon and release their own GPU renderer too.

    smallLux have now telnet connection...
this mean... that you can play with camera, tonemapping, materilas, mapping, skylight... while rendering etc!
you play with setting directly in max ambient! this is amazing for a free software..
smallLux have implemented.... sppm.... an unbiased render engine, able to calculate really fast transparent materials with caustics....
for example a scene with a pool & water is a play for smallLux... no special material is needed or any other trick!

and now we have SPPM + Direct Light Sampling!
the two work great together.... Direct Light Sampling work very fast in de-noise lambertian surfaces!

please write me for more info.... and to get the right download link!

I trust Chaosgroup to deliver the best GPU render... This way I can keep the same workflow +/- but I love the competition in this field from all the other - this is to our benefit (as users)
