Hey hey!

Sounds like a cool challenge, looking forward to all the entries and lots of learning! This is my entry thread, I guess, so I'll be posting things here throughout, once I get some stuff started...

H'ok. So.

I have a couple initial ideas which I'm going to start working on, maybe do some sketching or mood-setting. Not sure completely yet what I want it to feel like, but since I have a very long time to work on it (March is still far), I figure I should really take time with this and plan it out. I don't get to do that much at all, so this should be fun!

- My first reaction was to put it on a cliffside high above the sea but Bertrand has snagged that one already and I don't want to do something too similar to other entries. Mine would've involved cactii. Maybe the house on the edge of a canyon, a rough river below.

- I want to play with fog and rocks, so a foggy seaside with lots of lights and halos and steam could work well. That would be quite a challenge too, I think. Dark, gloomy, lots of greens/greys/blues contrasted with orange interior lights. Perhaps in front of a sandy beach with an old boat hull that's been run aground? Hmmm...

- It would be cool to do the house as it would be 100 years from now, abandoned, with broken windows, overgrown with vines. Lots of opportunities to improve my texturing and detail work which I find lacking in a lot of my work. I know it's not conventional arch viz as it's seen today, but I love what Joseph Michael Gandy did to Soane's bank. Very surreal, very romantic, very detailed. Another variant on that is if the whole coastline just caved in and sank, so we see the house underwater, at the bottom of the sea. Fishies...

- I want to put it on the moon. Funny as that may sound, we don't see enough moon architecture around here and I think that the moon may feel a bit neglected as a result.

- From the property line and the boundary wall, it looks like the house was originally designed on an urban site (I haven't checked out the architect's website yet...) so maybe setting it in a small European town with a view of the valley, a narrow street coming up from below along the pool edge with a very tall rock retaining wall soaring high up to where the house is. VW buggy going up the street is mandatory. That and one of those red-circle European road signs.

- I've never done a full-out forest. Probably because my machine hasn't been able to handle that many good trees and forests tend to look cheesy unless they are VERY well done, so that could be a good goal... Stick the house in an old-growth pine forest, maybe integrate it with some rock formations like the Canadian Shield (I went camping in Parry Sound this summer and fell in love with the landscape there again, never fails). Lots of moss, pine trees, reeds, murky water, Arthur Erickson-like...

- To be continued...

Hm. That's all for now, though I'm gonna try to come up with a few more and then maybe block out a couple possible color/shot setups for each on paper and decide then.

Impressive brain-storming. I'd like to see you do it in a forest. As you say, it's been done a bit but not often right. Otherwise, your first point about the cacti kind of evokes a desertic image. I can picture something very remote in New Mexico under a crushing white-hot sun or a fiery orange sunset. That would be cool too (no pun intended).
Oh and sorry for stealing that Scandinavian setting ;-)

Alright. Enjoying Christmas, but I've been gathering mood photos and inspiration that I'll have to upload soon so I can get started! Haven't done much at all in the way of the actual 3D scene, but I've got the scenario figured out.

The house will be at the edge of the swamp or swampy bay of a lake somewhere in Parry Sound. It will be surrounded by big pines with exposed roots and murky water with reeds and debris. The pool will be removed and changed into a reflection pond surrounded by rocks. Overall gloomy atmosphere with, hopefully, a touch of fog to make those sunbeams sing and let me fade the background away.

I think those would work great for the exterior.

Now THIS should be really cool!! I love those trees.. WOW, if you pull this off!
Grass looking good mate, buut at 40 million polys, might prove to be problematic once your raytrace starts kicking in.

Got my eye on this one! =)

The grass is looking quite good. Maybe a closer shot though? From such a distance and with so little height variation it looks more like a simple material applied to the ground would do the trick just as well.

I'm looking forward for an update. I think this concept for surroundings is the most interesting so far, probably because I have something similar on my mind Grass looks promising. Make it less uniform.

Indigo! Would love to see it in action.

So I've done nothing because of grad school applications and too many projects/deadlines in the past couple of weeks. Aaah! My poor brain!

Now that things will settle down a bit, hopefully I'll get a real start on things, eh? Bored of just reading about my ideas yet? I am.

I HAVE been doing research in the meantime though. I like the forest in The Antichrist, I like http://www.todayandtomorrow.net/wp-c...ng_house_1.jpg, I like http://images2.layoutsparks.com/1/22...ight-image.jpg, and I like http://api.ning.com/files/HfW81S-KqX...ark_forest.jpg

More to come soon. I hope.

And you know what? I'm not even gonna look at the other entries right now. I'd probably get too depressed.

That first reference picture looks like it has a lot of potential.
