Another update. In the end I decided it's about time to get a "theme" going and went for a rained out bbq (is it obvious enough?).

Anyway, still quite low render settings, no dof and still has some bad noise, but this is starting to take a long time to render...

Lowered wall too, I agree it was pretty obtrusive before.... Thanks for pointing it out.

Maybe a big tattered Happy Birthday Paul banner? Just kidding, looks really good. Like the foreground

A really great update! If you can also make the walls wet too that would be much nicer.

Very nice image! I like the mood!
    I have a question,
Since I'm using Maya/ Vray myself, I've been desperate to find a solution to apply the "LWF" method in Maya/Vray...
I was looking at your images and wondering if you are using this method?
In that case, how do you do it?
I think I figured it out... But I'm not sure if I missed something..
Do you mind to share the information here if you can?

Thanks guys for the comments, I appreciate it.

This is now pretty much the final update. I did a lot of work on the colour balancing as I think it was not quite so right before.

The render isn't very clean and sharp but I'm happy with it in a way, it looks a bit messy.

    Here's a HD 1920x1080 render.

The ambience and foliage in this last render are just perfect, the only thing I can comment on is the trunk of that "hero"-tree just left of the outside-bar. Maybe just photoshop in a better texture for the trunk to give it a less 3d/plastic look?

The dof of those background trees works perfeclty imho, overall a very nice image!
