The results of the 2011 Lumion Competition were announced today, an boy what amazing things can be done with this tool! It really makes me rethink the way I work today, and I have a lot to learn about it (and look forward too). I think the movie that came out in third place is the best among them all… maybe it’s the strong architectural design that fits my taste so precisely.

Ludvík Koutný showcases a remarkable set of renders, recreating Louis Kahn’s Esherick House in 3D using Mental Ray as his render engine. We don’t see too many Architectural Visualizations that good done with Mental Ray… And this house design by Louis Kahn is new too me so I’m grateful for it for this reason too.

Piranha was commissioned by Silverstein Properties to create a short film depicting the completion of The New World Trade Center site. Piranha wrote, produced, art directed, filmed, and finished all vfx for this inspiring piece marking the 10th year anniversary of 9/11. One of the best I’ve seen!

How many times do you get to visualize a project designed by a world leading architecture firm for a world leading company? I wish I could have been on the team doing the new “Mothership” – Apple’s new campus in Cupertino designed by Foster + Partner. Steve Jobs says the groundbreaking for this magnificent flying-saucer-like edifice is planned for next year, with completion scheduled for 2015. What do you think of it – Design & Visuals?

Marcin “Neb” Jastrzebski shares a very detailed making-of article of his winning “House in Matsubara” project for the latest Evermotion competition. Marcin really puts in a lot of effort on this one with many references for his modo modeling and material work using Fryrender in the various moods he created for this beautiful house design by Ken’ichi Otani Architects.

A companion set of images to the making-of ‘The House’ article by Alex York. You will find here the full set of still images and the video too. Unlike the latest, and now annoying, trend of jazzing everything up with animating the scene buildup, adding light streaks, paths and other motion graphics to the mix… This is one of the better Architectural Explanatory Animation I’ve seen for a long time. Nothing fancy about the camera movements and yet it’s not the boring walk-through too. This animation was intended to allow the Client to understand the house in great detail and also the relations between the various spaces – the circulation among them.
