The Mill by Chris Kowal

The Mill is a conceptual design project, done by Vancouver based 3D Artist Chris Kowal, to showcase MP Lighting‘s LED lights. Chris started his WIP thread about this project on the forums back in July 2011 and kept updating us about his progress. Yesterday the work was finally published in the form of an interactive website, best viewed on a tablet device and designed with the sales team of MP Lighting in mind offering them a portable tool to help their clients visualize lighting designs. All the work (design, modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering) was done by Chris except the coding of the site.

Making of Church of the Light

Elvin Aliyev’s 3d recreation of Tadao Ando’s Church of the Light and adjoined Sunday School extension is one of the best made and look better than any photo I’ve seen of these projects. His render set showcases the design in a remarkable way with his attention to the materials, camera placement and light which shows great respect to the work of the master that Ando is. Efim was very kind to put it into words in the form of this making-of article. Enjoy!

Clearview Residence / Altius Architecture

Clearview Residence by Altius Architecture caught my eye in an instant with the rich in materials design and single point perspective viewpoints I like so much. There is so much to learn from just looking at these images that showcase corten steel, grey/blue ‘Cape Cod’ wood siding, ipe wood decking, slate, gravel, grass and more all under daylight and various interior lighting scenarios. I just wished they had taken all the night viewpoints at daytime too.

Making of Saint Benedict Chapel

2009 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate – Peter Zumthor, is among my favorite architects. I especially like his work on Thermal Bath Vals, and must admit I wasn’t so familiar with his work on Saint Benedict Chapel until Federico Spoltore showcased his 3d recreation of it on the forums… and what a recreation it is!!! I’m sure you’ll learn a new thing or two after reading this. Enjoy!
